Would plywood make a futon more comfortable?

Would plywood make a futon more comfortable?

Postby LJ » Mon Dec 28, 2009 4:01 am

People always complain about feeling the bars on a metal futon. In a week or so, I will loose a bed; but I have still have my futon. I was thinking of putting the futon in my bedroom, place plywood between the bars and leave the mattress on top. Would that solve the metal bars problem? or should i just use a memory form topper? But if i do that, can i leave it on there when it becomes couch form? Sigh...

Yes, plywood will make a huge difference since you are spreading the weight across a larger area, not just a few thin bars. Your futon will also last longer since it will wear more evenly. You don't need a very thick piece of plywood, either, so it shouldn't be too expensive.

As far as removing the plywood each time you want to go from bed to sofa, it would make sense to determine exactly where the frame folds, then cut your plywood and hinge it at that point. Then you wouldn't have to remove the plywood each time you fold the frame.

Would plywood make a futon more comfortable?

.I purchased a futon for my son about 15 years ago. No matter what he tried he still did not get along with his futon. I think plywood will have to lay flat. It will not bend as you adjust the futon for a couch.
The most reasonable price wise is an air matures, it would lay on your futon and then it would be a good bed.

I either have to buy a bed or futon for my apartment this fall quarter. If futons are comfortable, I would rather get one than a bed to save space. Are they comfortable?
