what kind of dog should i get?

my cousin just got a new dog and it is not working out well. we were wanting a new dog as well but like her we are very cat oriented and we will simply NOT tolerate a dog that is even remotely aggressive towards cats.(of course we will try to train it, i know dogs will chase cats until they learn boundaries) I think my cousin is having so much trouble because she got a herding dog that was abused.

our local shelter refuses to socialize the animals before adopting them so they cannot tell us if the dogs will get along with cats, or even other dogs.

What breeds will be most likely to succeed?

What we do not want: long fur, large breeds(saint Bernard's, grate danes), small breeds(pocket/purse pets or even corgis, and definitely NO Chihuahuas)

What it ok: medium to large fair tempered gets along with other dogs and cats.

Our ideal dog is a golden retriever but they are hard to come by. What do you recommend?

umm dunno what more to tell you on specifics but umm"[i have] 6 cats ranging in the ages from 2 years to 8 years old. [i] also [have] 2 dogs. one small dog @ 3 years (corgi/chihuahua/dachshund mix) and one english pointer @ 7 years."

Go for Dacschound puppies, they are adorable, cute and alert and easy to maintain. I own 3 dogs and they are simply great.

walk up and down the hall between cages and the dog that comes to the gate is the chosen one. my mum and dad did that for a cat and we had the cat for 16 years.

The cat issue is a no brainer WHATEVER dog you get make sure you get as a puppy so it matures with the cats in a family enviorment. Just make sure the cats don't show aggression. Personally my favorite is a Scottish Terrier in fact I would suggest Terriers over almost any breed. These are good for small apartments if too small maybe the Boston terrier or the Jack Russel...

you rarely see golden retrievers? are you for real? lol. i see them everywhere. All dogs will chase cats its in their nature. You can get any dog, just bring them up with cats and teach them the boundaries they will get along great.

dogs i think would suit you:
-staffy, usaully get along great with other animals. Really great dogs they are.
-rottweiler, usaully get along good with other animals and kids, need lots of training and socializing.
-jack russell, must warn you they have big attitudes! If the cat is an adult there should be no problems.
-great Dane, very friendly in general.

once again its hard to pick a dog for you as all dogs can be aggressive..etc, you need to be more specific in what you want in a dog. I cant think of any other breeds right now. the dogs i did pick for you are commonly found in the pound.

BTW your pound is stupid. All dogs should be tested to see if they are cat/dog and child friendly.

first off what the hell are you doing online at this hour?!? (is the cousin fyi)

secondly.

For everyone info, since mick didn't say, he has 6 cats ranging in the ages from 2 years to 8 years old. he also has 2 dogs. one small dog @ 3 years (corgi/chihuahua/dachshund mix) and one english pointer @ 7 years.

and @ isabella: my dear this technique does indeed work wonders for cats, but not for dogs. every dog will come to the cage door, but just because he is interested in you does not mean he will not eat your cat the first chance he gets.

lastly : we are well aware that our shelter are fucktards. this is the reason i am having so much trouble with my dog. he obviously does NOT get along with cats and i wish they could have told me that!!!!! bastards. i'm gonna send a complaint... or kill. kill is fun. damn it i cant even give this dog back since i now have evidence that he has bitten me to get to the cat, and they'll just put him down first thing! GAH I fucking hate the shelter.

I have 2 small dogs, a yorkie and Chihuahua. Lexie just turned a year yesterday and Levi will be a year next month. He is fixed and she is not. I am looking to expand my little family I wanted either another yorkie for 400 or less or Im thinking about getting a bigger dog sense I am living on my own and I have a fenced in backyard. I was wondering what kind of dog would be good at protecting me but also not play to rough with my little ones.
