I haven't had a bowel movement since I got my wisdom teeth out. Is this normal?

Postby IzzyP on Sun Sep 28, 2008 6:18 am

I got my wisdom teeth out on Monday morning at 7:30 A.M. The first two days all I had to eat was soup and jello. On Christmas Eve, I had a little bit of fettuccine alfredo. Yesterday, I ate solid food for the first time including vegetables. Today I had soup and cereal. I am prescribed to penicillin and vicodin. I have not had a bowel movement in this entire time and it's worrying me. Is this normal? When can I expect a bowel movement? Should I be worried?

You are probably on opioids for you surgery (vicodin, percocet, tylenol with codeine, etc.). Opioids cause constipation. Stop the pain killers or just take a laxative.

Opiate based pain medication can cause constipation. I would not be worried unless you have other abdominal issues (i.e. pain). If in doubt give your doc a call. :-) Bottom line- Don't worry about it.

I am sure the meds arn't helping with that.
Check out the website it will tell you all the side effects of the vicodin including that it does sometimes cause less frequent bowel movements.

No food in, no food out. You should have one in the next 24-48 hours. If not, I would try some Miralax and also eat some fiber ASAP with lots of water to try and get your system back on track again.

You were probably perscribed opiate pain killers, opiates commonly cause constipation. You can take an over the counter stool softener and a stimulant laxitive, you take it before you co to bed, and you should have a bowel movement the next morning.

You probably been taking the Vicodin for the pain. Analgesics can cause constipation. Medicines (especially strong pain medicines, such as narcotics, and antidepressants.

Constipation occurs when bowel movements become difficult or less frequent. The normal length of time between bowel movements ranges widely from person to person. Some people have bowel movements three times a day; others, only one or two times a week. Going longer than three days without a bowel movement is too long. After three days, the stool or feces become harder and more difficult to pass

How Can I Prevent Constipation?
There are several things you can do to prevent constipation. Among them:

Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber. Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole-grain bread and cereal (especially bran).

Fiber and water help the colon pass stool.

Drink 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of water and other fluids a day (unless fluid restricted for another medical condition).

Liquids that contain caffeine, such as coffee and soft drinks, seem to have a dehydrating effect and may need to be avoided until your bowel habits return to normal.

Some people may need to avoid milk, as dairy products may be constipating for them.

Exercise regularly.

Move your bowels when you feel the urge.

What Should I Do If I Am Constipated?
If you are constipated, try the following:

Drink two to four extra glasses of water a day (unless fluid restricted).
Try warm liquids, especially in the morning.
Add fruits and vegetables to your diet.
Eat prunes and/or bran cereal.
If needed, use a very mild stool softener or laxative (such as Peri-colace or Milk of Magnesia). Do not use laxatives for more than two weeks without calling your doctor, as laxative overuse can aggravate your symptoms.

I wouldn't worry if i were you as worry and stress can also contribute to constipation. Remember to do a thorough oral hygiene to prevent food debris accumulating in the pockets where the teeth were taken out......although gently to avoid bleeding. The food debris might cause infection and bad breath.

Vicodin is very constipating. Try some prunes and if that doesn't work some MOM will do the trick. Might I suggest that after 4 days post wisdom teeth removal you really shouldn't be needing vicodin. Try weaning of it and taking some tylenol or similar. In a healthy person you should ideally have a daily bowel action but 1-3 days is within normal range.
